I love writing because it brings people together and sparks conversation. Not everyone always agrees with what you have to say, and that’s the beautiful thing about it.

I can tell when not everyone agrees, it is very apparent. The thing is, my writing is based only on MY experience. Not anyone else’s. So it really doesn’t matter if you agree or not or if you are offended. But for some reason I care so much about hurting other people’s feelings that I actually recently went back and edited my writing so that it was less pessimistic and offensive.

Just to be completely clear, nobody asked me to change it, I made the decision myself.

People did not respect my honest opinion and experience but I respected other people’s feelings so much that I actually changed my writing. In doing so, I changed my experience. It took the honesty out of my piece. The experience was no longer mine, it was a sugar coated lie molded by the feelings of other people.

Posting my writing and editing it after is something I vow to never do again. I will never take the honesty out of a piece to spare other people’s feelings because that threatens my integrity as a writer.

There are so many famous writers and authors who have offended people with their work. Let’s look at J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter series. She wrote about witchcraft and wizardry and offended Catholics everywhere. But she didn’t take her books off the bookshelves to edit them and make sure she didn’t offend the Catholics anymore. So nor will I edit my writing as to not offend my readers.

I will always respect the opinions of other people and I hope that others will do the same in return. But I want to be a writer and a writer is what I will be. I will write the honest, unedited truth, and if you don’t like it then you don’t have to read it.
